A fireplace mantel is the perfect place to display a Christmas scene. There are many different styles you can choose from – you can go with traditional or try something a little different this year.

What kind of décor are you decorating in for Christmas? Down home country? Elegant? Eco? The style you choose for your main décor should also be reflected in your mantel scene.

For many people, the mantel scene is usually a nativity scene complete with a manger, animals and several figurines. Nativity sets are beautiful and there are many you can choose from.

If you get a nativity set that’s made of aged wood, this would work well with a country décor. Also in keeping with a country décor, you can use a narrow sleigh filled with boughs of green, pinecones and presents wrapped in red gingham.

Another way to decorate the mantel is in what’s called primitive style by using boughs of real garland, fruit and primitive figurines. You can find primitive Santa figurines by scouring the online Christmas stores.

Or if you would rather have snowmen, you can decorate the mantel with primitive snowmen made from muslin or wood. Some people confuse the primitive style with the country style of decorating but they are not the same. Primitive has more of an early 1900s feel to it. You would easily be able to find some of the decorations in homes from your great grandmother’s generation.

You can set your mantel scene up to reflect scenes from other cultures. For example, if you had Chinese ornaments on your Christmas tree, your mantel would look fantastic with paper lanterns and small bowls housing Christmas balls.

In the center, you could take a photo holder – one of the ones in the shape of a miniature tree-and you could hang ornaments with Chinese writing on the branches. You can find Chinese ornaments wishing the buyer joy or luck or wealth.

A snow village is another holiday scene you could grace your mantel with. If you’re worried about getting the confetti snow on your floor, you can use cotton balls to create a snow effect.

But don’t just stick the cotton balls up as is. Instead, gently pull apart the cotton balls and thin them out. Decorate the mantle with Christmas village homes and businesses and set them up so that they’re lighted. You’ll have a great focal point and the soft light will add a nice touch.

For a more elegant mantel Christmas scene, hang a square mirror above your fireplace mantel. Place tapered silver or gold candles inside of hurricane lanterns. In the middle of the mantel, place a short vase full of white roses. Use silver beading pearls entwined with real garland to hang from the front of the mantel.

One of the many Christmas traditions people celebrate is caroling. One account of this tradition is said to stem back to centuries ago when people would gather and sing in a religious gathering. Others say the history of caroling has nothing to do with religion and is instead given the outdated term of wassailing.

No one knows with one hundred percent certainty. But both sides agree it did involve a group of people known as carolers. Legend has it that this group of carolers gathered together and sang in order to be fed, hence the term, “sing for your supper.”

These groups of carolers would travel to various neighborhoods singing their songs. The origin of where caroling began has been disputed with some saying it began in Italy, while others insist it’s an English tradition.

Whichever version is correct, as time passed, door to door caroling died down somewhat but is still very much a tradition especially in smaller towns with a close knit population. For many people, today’s modern caroling involves carolers singing in Christmas parades, at church functions and in private homes.

At home or work Christmas parties, people will gather around a piano or stereo, play Christmas songs and have their own version of caroling. Did you know there’s a day set aside every December for caroling? It’s called Go Caroling Day.

If you want to plan a caroling event for your group or for your family, it’s not difficult. It’s a great way to spread the joy to your family and friends. No one has to have perfect pitch to sing in a caroling group.

All you have to do is be willing to give it a shot. Find out how many people would be interested in going and set a caroling meeting. Pick a date to go caroling and schedule a few warm up singing sessions with your group of volunteers.

Print out copies and staple them together of the carols your group would like to sing and practice until you can sing in relatively harmony. You’re not looking for perfection – you just want to make sure everyone has some familiarity with the songs you plan to sing. You can purchase books, but depending on the size of your group, that could quickly get expensive if you’re the one paying for them.

Know ahead of time where you’re going to go. Some communities have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to trespassers and sadly, carolers would fall under the heading of trespassers in some housing areas.

You don’t have to stick to going door to door if the weather doesn’t cooperate. You can visit children’s hospitals, nursing homes, community churches and more. Plan to go caroling this Christmas season. It’s an experience you’ll always cherish.

Christmas is the season of the gimmes. Gimme toys, gimme electronic gadgets, gimmme gift certificates. That’s not the real meaning of Christmas. It’s not about the parties or the sharing of tasty meals, either. All the holiday gift giving, all the parties, all of the shiny decorations can take over the meaning of Christmas and it can get swallowed up. Christmas books can help remind you of what it’s really all about.

The simple Christmas gatherings of yesteryear have turned into one stress after another until you can feel like you’re stuck in a maze. With the hustle and bustle of everything going on, getting off track and lost in the maze of focusing on material stuff happens.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way. You can get back on track and have the true meaning of Christmas foremost in your holiday celebrations. You can pick out Christmas books that you can read together as a family that will show the true meaning of the holiday.

These books come in different formats and aren’t difficult to get ahold of. If you have little ones at home and you want them to understand that Christmas is not about the material possessions, start a practice of sharing Christmas related stories after dinner every night or as a bedtime story. You can get under the blankets together and teach them holiday priorities that will last a lifetime. Start with ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas!

You can easily purchase these books from most retail stores or online stores that carry Christmas products. There are even some books that will share the meaning of Christmas in a way that make it come alive for your family by allowing the acting out of parts of the story.

Some books will offer you the opportunity to personal the stories by putting your child’s name in the book. Children remember the stories because of hearing their name used. And what child doesn’t laugh out loud and beg for more when his or her parents read a story about The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

What are the best books to buy that can teach the meaning of the holiday? The books that teach about giving and being thankful for even the small things in life like The Christmas Shoes.

Find books that teach about the origin of Christmas and the peaceful day that it started out as. Look for books that teach that Christmas is about being grateful for family, that it’s about not focusing on ourselves but on being there for others.

Seek to purchase books that will teach about how Christmas is shared the world over. Children are natural born learners and they soak in what they’re taught but when we get to busy during Christmas with the getting and the glittery decorating, they can learn the wrong lessons. So take the time out to share with them Christmas books that will show them the real meaning of this holiday.

Kids love everything about Christmas except waiting for the day to get here. With them taking a break from school, you’ll often hear cries of, “I don’t have anything to do.” You can keep them busy this holiday season with Christmas crafts that are easy and fun for the little ones to make.

Christmas Placemat Craft: Using recycled Christmas cards, tear off the backs where the writing is. You’ll need about three regular sized Christmas cards to make each placemat.

Have the kids glue the cards decoration side up down on colored construction paper. When the glue dries, cover the craft front and back with clear contact paper, making sure there are no open ends or gaps. Kids love setting their plats on their own special Christmas place mat.

Santa Ornament: This makes a great little gift for kids to make and give their friends or teachers too. Pick up large plastic ornaments at the craft store. These ornaments will open for you to put items inside.

Open the ornament and fill it with peppermints. Secure it closed again. Using a medium sized wooden ball, glue on jiggly eyes. Once the eyes are set, glue the wooden ball onto the top the plastic ornament.

Next, add cotton hair for the head, mustache and beard. Glue a red felt ‘hat’ on top of the hair. At the base of the ornament, glue a long piece of black felt for Santa’s belt. Glue the front bottom of the ornament to a thin wooden heart that’s been painted black. The curves in the heart will be Santa’s feet.

Christmas Countdown Chain: For this popular craft, you’ll need red and green construction paper cut into thin, even strips. The kids can decorate the paper strips with Christmas writing and glitter glue.

Form the strips into connecting circles and glue each one closed. Once the glue is dry, hang the circle within easy reach of the child. Each day that passes until Christmas, the kids get to tear off one of the links of the chain.

Candy Cane Reindeer: This craft is an oldie but a favorite among children. All you need are candy canes, jiggly eyes, pipe cleaners, mini pom-poms and glue. At the top of the candy cane, glue a pipe cleaner, twisting it into the shape of antlers. Glue jiggly eyes on either side of the reindeer ‘head’ and add the nose to the end of the candy cane.

Cookie Cutter Ornaments: To do this craft, you’ll need an assortment of cookie cutters in various holiday shapes. The ones that work the best are snowmen, Santa, trees and bell shapes.

Place each cookie cutter on colored construction paper. Trace around it. Cut it out. Have the kids decorate each cut out with glitter and mini pom-poms for Christmas balls on the tree.

For the snowmen, use mini black pom-poms for his buttons. You can use jiggly eyes on the snowmen and Santa. Once each ornament is finished, use a hole puncher to punch a hole at the top. Thread thin ribbon through the hole and let the kids hang their special ornament from the tree.

Everyone has different tastes in decorating for the holidays, right down to the lights. No matter what type of Christmas lights you enjoy putting up, your choices are no longer the same as they used to be.

Now you have a wider selection to choose from, better value and the kind of lights that give your home a soft, romantic holiday glow or ones that can light up the night and make your home a masterpiece in electricity.

There are bulbs in an array of colors, many different watts and various sizes and shapes. You can spend a little bit of money on lights or you can spend a lot. Knowing which kind to choose from depends on the size of your home, and how much ground you’d like to cover.

If you don’t know what kinds of lights to get, you run the risk of buying the wrong lights and then having to take or send them back. One of the choices you have in Christmas lights is the LED lights.

The initials LED stand for light emitting diode. These lights don’t take as much power to use and you can get a wider angle of light. These kinds of lights offer longer use (thousands of hours) and you can use them to decorate inside your home or outside in the yard.

They’re a very safe type of bulb because they don’t get hot to the fingertips unlike regular lights, which can sometimes be a fire hazard. With LED lights, you don’t have to worry if your tree dries out like you do with regular lights. They are a little more expensive than the run of the mill Christmas lights, but your family’s safety is worth the cost.

Another choice you can go with is the rope lights. These are lights inside of tubing. These lights come in different colors and you can get them in chasing lights or still versions. They can interconnect with other strands to form longer strands.

These lights are perfect for those hard to decorate items or areas and they can be used indoor or outdoor. In fact, if you use rope lights to line your home’s walkway, if kids accidentally step on them, they’re stepping on the tubing instead of sharp glass that can cut them. Plus, these lights can contain the same LED technology that saves energy.

There are so many Christmas light options for you to choose from to make your holiday really shine this year. You’ll need to know how many lights you’ll require that can run safely on your home’s circuit. If you do choose LED lights, make sure you’re happy with your choice since these lights do tend to last for the long haul.

Planning a party is always a big endeavor, but toss in the flurry of extra activities at the holidays and it can take a toll on even the most organized people. You should always do some holiday party planning so that the event runs as smoothly as possible with the least amount of fuss on your part.

You want to start out by setting the date for your party as early as you can. There are a lot of parties given in December and you don’t want to get a lot of, “Sorry, can’t make it” replies because someone else’s party was scheduled first.

Remember that more is not always merrier. You don’t want to invite so many people that everyone is packed in elbow to elbow. Send out invitations to those you really want to spend time with. You can send out invitations via snail mail or through email and there are even some free email invitations you can use for your party.

Walk out of your house and back in. Does it have a Christmas scent? If not, you can prepare the scents in your home before the party by using cinnamon scented pinecones or you can simmer orange peels and cinnamon in a pot on the stove. You can also sprinkle scented oil such as warm cookies in your vacuum cleaner bag. Run it over the carpet or floor and it’ll give off a nice scent.

Is your party going to be formal or casual? Will your party be for women only? Men only? Will it be a family party? You can base your theme around the tone of your party. If you’re going to have a theme party, stick with one or two colors max. There are many different themes to choose from.

Winter Wonderland: You can have a winter wonderland party by having only silver colors. From the decorations inside to the sprayed silver silk poinsettias lining the walk outside, you can make your home sparkle like a winter day. Hang hundreds of tiny white Christmas lights throughout your entertaining area. You can use white dishes to set your table with and white candy canes for seating markers.

Recipe Exchange Party: This theme party takes some of the pressure off the person hosting the party because the snacks are brought by the guests. Send out invitations and every person attending has to bring a favorite cookie recipe along with a plate of those cookies.

Kids Make It and Take It: If you have children as most of your friends do and desire to have a party where the kids can feel like a part of it, have a simple project ready for the kids to make that can be completed during the party.

Black Tie Christmas Party: You can host an elegant get together with your friends and family and give the grown ups a night out. Break out the best china. Remember that white is always elegant, so incorporate that when you’re decorating. Serve champagne and have room for slow dancing. It’ll be a night your loved ones won’t forget.

There are so many Christmas ideas for holiday party planning that you might get overwhelmed just trying to decide which one you want to choose. But just remember that you can always try out another idea the following year!

Keeping visual records in pictures is long standing tradition in most families.
The images are taken, carefully labeled and dutifully stored away. Taking snapshots of your Christmas moments are a good idea, but they can’t capture the animation, the sound of the holidays in real time. Making a Christmas video will not only give you years of enjoyment, but you can send a DVD of the video to family who couldn’t make it in to celebrate the holiday with you.

When digital recorders first hit the market, they were bulky in craftsmanship and they were expensive on top of that. Now, though, digital recorders are affordable, lightweight and can easily be tucked away in a pocket to be pulled out. They’re ready to go (many in less than two seconds) and they can get that moment you want to save captured. They’re definitely a worthy investment.

These handy video recorders are compatible with computers. Once you capture the images, you can enhance them with fonts, background colors, online scrapbook pages and more.

You can share with your family and friends on all your social media sites and you can even digitally add Christmas music to the background. You can create virtual storybooks starring your family and they make great gifts even for the hard to please relative.

Unlike cameras, you don’t have to leave out one family member since someone has to take the picture and unlike cameras, you won’t get a blurred image of someone running to jump into the scene before the flash goes off.

With a video recorder, you can set it to record when you want it to record plus, with tripods, you can set it up in any room in your house. Make sure that whichever room you use has adequate lighting.

Make sure the room is neat and that any cups or plates from snacking aren’t showing up in the background. Make sure your video recorder has an adequate battery supply. Always keep extras on hand during the holidays.

You can record each event for Christmas – from the visiting to the opening of gifts to the sharing of holiday meals. When you purchase a video recorder, you want to aim for the top of the line.

Get the best quality video recorder that you can find to save your holiday memories. Don’t use your regular digital camera with video function because those are often grainy and out of focus.

With a video camera, you can also keep traditions alive. When recording your holiday memories, you can interview each family member and have them share their favorite holiday memory from both past and present Christmas celebrations. Have them talk about what traditions mean the most to them – this is a good way to pass those traditions down to the next generation.

When the word collector springs to mind, many people immediately imagine someone who seeks great works of art to hang on his or her walls – something painted by the masters of the art world. Or perhaps you think of someone who haunts antique stores hoping for just the right find. Not many people think of Christmas ornaments as something to be collected. Yet, ornaments are one of the most collected items in the world.

Ornaments are not viewed by collectors as simply another decoration to hang on the tree or display in a case. These items are wrapped in family history and tradition. They take people back to the ‘remember when’ side of life.

More often than not, they become cherished keepsakes because of sentimental ties to the item. Many people who collect Christmas ornaments associate the ornament with an event or a person.

For example, some older people treasure the Christmas ornaments brought back to the States from loved ones stationed in other countries. They began their collection as a result of their loved ones’ military service and now those ornaments are viewed as a scrapbook of tangible memories.

Christmas ornament collecting doesn’t have to be reserved to the holidays. People can purchase ornaments all year long because there are specialty Christmas stores and even online shops where collectors can hunt to their hearts’ content.

Ornaments also make great gifts for anyone, but especially for the collector if you know exactly what they’re looking for. Just remember that there’s no strict guideline to collecting unless you happen to collect in a series or you collect a certain type such as vintage ornaments. If that’s the case, then you’d want to know what you need to look for in the ornament to make sure you got the genuine item and not a copycat.

Collecting Christmas ornaments is a hobby that can breach any age gap. Even children and teens can collect them. One company makes specialty holiday ornaments that celebrate each year of a child’s life. Collect those now and by the time your child is old enough to put up his or her own tree, those ornaments will become a part of a memorable tradition for them.

Some people do collect ornaments from a financial point of view, knowing that the ornaments will only increase in value as time passes by. What type of Christmas ornaments should you collect?

You should collect the type of Christmas ornaments that appeal to you – and you don’t have to stick to just one type of collection, either. If you like whimsical snowmen, then collect those. If the Old World ornaments are more your style, then go for those. Or if you can’t choose between the two, start collecting both.

How frustrating is it to plan the perfect holiday and get ready to purchase a sought after item like Christmas candles and you can’t find the scent you want because all of the good ones are gone?

If you wait, you’ll get stuck with the leftovers – the ones that have been picked over and no one else wanted. Tradition has it that the biggest shopping day of the year is the day after Thanksgiving.

On that day, consumers all across America crowd into stores determined to bring home what they need at a bargain price. Or they jam Internet websites ordering items left and right and some sites have even crashed due to the enormous volume of visitors.

Why do people put off buying what they need until the last minute? Until they have join the herd of people trying to shop? It’s certainly not fun. Part of the reason why we put off shopping (besides those of us who are procrastinators at heart) is because we fall into line and we follow tradition. What’s so great about a tradition that raises your blood pressure and creates mass clouds of rudeness? Nothing.

Don’t wait until the holidays are right in front of you to stock up on your Christmas candles. Don’t put yourself in the stressful position where you must get the candles. Get them early so you can relax.

Did you know the symbolism behind having candles at Christmastime? Years ago, candles were said to give light in order to keep bad things at bay. They were given as gifts to symbolize new beginnings and they were used as a symbol of bringing families together – hence the marriage unity candle you see in some wedding ceremonies.

You can see candles glowing in windows in some of the beautiful Christmas paintings we have today. The candles in the window symbolize welcoming loved ones home and giving light to help the lost on their way.

For those who chose to go with a Victorian theme to decorate their homes, miniature candles are often placed on the tree. But keep in mind those must be carefully watched and if you have small children or know that small children are going to be in attendance, save the lighting of the candles until they’re not around.

Candles lend an elegant touch to warm family gatherings as you dine for holiday dinners. You don’t want to have to settle for just any old candle when you go to purchase yours for this season of celebration. Go ahead and get yours now so that you can get the best of the selection before the crowds hit the shopping circuit and get all the best Christmas – candles not to mention the best buys!

Every holiday season, retailers compete with one another to draw in the shoppers. They’ll advertise in newspapers, television and on the radio for percentages off certain items or they’ll give coupons for additional money off things that are already marked down. Consumers are hoping to find a great Christmas sale online.

Online shopping stores are not really that much different than those housed in buildings that you can go to. Just like retail stores, they have to offer sales to make their merchandise more enticing for you to buy than their competition’s merchandise. Now more than ever is the best time to look for great Christmas sales online.

You can shop for what you want for every single person on your shopping list. From babies to tweens, teenagers to adults – there’s something online that’ll satisfy everyone. To get the best deals in online shops, you don’t have to spread a bunch of newspaper ads out all over your kitchen table trying to figure out which one has the best sale. You don’t have to clip coupons (that you sometimes forget and leave home anyway) and you don’t have to bring in the newspaper ad to get the sale price when you shop online.

You can do your comparison shopping by pulling up multiple store sites and checking the prices. If you’re shopping for clothing, you’ll be able to follow a size chart and pick out the size and color you’d like.

There are no worries if you happen to receive an item and decide it’s not right for you. All you have to do is return the item back to the online store and many stores even provide free return shipping. As for coupons, online stores offer percentages off as well.

If you reside in a part of the United States or overseas where the weather doesn’t always cooperate, you get the added bonus of not having to go out on ice slicked roads. You can shop sitting by a nice, crackling fire with a cup of coffee or cocoa in your hand.

But like retail stores, online stores have great bargains and the savvy shopper will be on the lookout for those deals. Make sure you’re constantly watching for sales and paying attention when the prices are good. You don’t want to be one of the shoppers who luck out on great deals.

With the money you’ll save finding a great Christmas sale online, you can treat yourself to a few gifts, too. Once you’re done with your shopping, all you have to do is wait for the delivery truck to arrive!
